Background and Objective: Mental health is one of the essential dimensions of the human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) disability assessment schedule II (WHODAS II) has been introduced as an appropriate tool for mental health assessment. This study was conducted to prepare the Persian version of WHODAS II and to determine its psychometric characteristics in individuals with psychiatric disorders.
Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried-out in two university hospitals in Tehran City, Iran. After translating and adapting the questionnaire, the final version was validated by 9 experts. The content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI) were used to evaluate content validity. Additionally, the short-form 36 (SF-36) and EuroQol dimension (EQ-5D) were completed, and their results were compared with those of WHODAS II. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to assess the validity of WHODAS II, while the Cronbach α coefficient and the test-retest method were employed to evaluate its reliability.
Results: A total of 55 men (42%) and 74 women (57%) were included. The average age of the participants was 42.2 years. Face and content validities were acceptable for all items. The CVR for the items was above 0.79 and the CVI was above 0.78. The correlation coefficient between the WHODAS II and SF-36 or EQ-5D was above 0.81. The Cronbach α for internal consistency was 0.887.
Conclusion: The Persian version of the WHODAS II has acceptable validity and reliability in psychiatric patients. Therefore, it can be used at the bedside of patients and in disability research.
